Council Process Illustrations

for Fran for the People, Ward 1 Council Candidate in Akron, OH

Goal: Create a series of illustrations that would help Fran Wilson’s campaign explain how council creates legislation, making the process easier to understand and more appealing.

Action: I talked with Fran about each image and what information was important to convey for each step of the process. I wanted each component to be recognizable to those familiar with council chambers, to look professional and polished, but also to show how the Akron Municipal Code is very much a living document.

Insight

For the culminating illustration of the new legislation joining the Code, Fran was inspired by Schoolhouse Rock and Clippy, and I was inspired by updating a physical binder of the printed Code during my time working at the Public Library. There is something very remarkable about recognizing that we make our rules, and they have power because we all uphold them. We wanted people to remember the role we all have in this process, that we can petition our leaders, and that our leaders represent us.

Outcome: The team loved the illustrations so much, they created a “Frandana” featuring them!
